Overview

MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) is a standard system for identifying the type of data contained in a file based on its extension. This is a method used by Web browsers to associate files of a certain type with applications that display files of that type.

If you find that a browser does not recognize the particular extension for a file hosted on your site, you will be able to create or remove the MIME type using the MIME Types configuration tool.

To Add a MIME Type

  1. Select the Website location for your custom MIME Type using the Directories dialog.
  2. Enter the MIME type for the file into the Type and Sub type field.
This entry should list the main type, followed by a slash, and then the subtype, as in the examples below:
    • text/plain
    • message/partial
    • application/octet-stream
  3. Enter the File Extension.
This entry should always start with a dot (.), as in .jpeg or .html.
  4. Click the Add MIME Type.

To Remove a MIME Type

  1. Select the location for your custom MIME Type using the MIME Type Location drop-down.
  2. Specify the MIME Type you would like to remove using the MIME Type(s) drop-down.
  3. Click Remove MIME Type.
